At least 21 children died in great Britain due to Streptococcus A infectionafter the Scottish Public Health Agency released this Wednesday two deaths in Scotland among children under the age of ten.
According to the report, between October 3 and December 25 there were seven deaths on Scottish soil due to infection with group A Streptococcus bacteria, two of which were children under 10 years of age.
Twenty-one children have died in the UK from diseases caused by strep A, the symptoms of which include: skin infections -impetigo-, scarlet fever and sore throat. While most of these infections are relatively mild and cured with antibioticson rare occasions the bacteria cause a disease that can be fatal.
Several European countries – among them Spain, France, Ireland and the UK – have detected a increase in cases of the disease among minors ten years in recent months, including several deaths.
