After 400 years, the beaver is back after its local extinction

Centuries ago, Britain’s rivers enjoyed the health of their ecosystems, largely due to free-swimming otters damming them, but the balance of rivers has gradually been lost as poachers have driven the otters to the brink of local extinction. It took four centuries for conservation groups to get something done and now for the first time, otters have returned to the island.

Otters are a genus of semi-aquatic rodents characterized by their ability to dam rivers and streams. By virtue of the stems they cut themselves with their strong teeth, they create barriers in water bodies which in turn encourage the emergence of wetlands which other species use to settle and thus maintain the balance of the ecosystem. Even though they cut down trees, this does not damage the forest at all and vice versa, they are tasked with keeping their habitat clean.

Unfortunately, otters were hunted to extinction in England at least 400 years ago for their glands, meat and fur. But after four centuries without water rats swimming on the island, a team of conservationists led by Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust have decided to reintroduce them to restore balance to streams and rivers.

Program to reintroduce otters to the UK

A stable in the county of Hampshire, in the south of England, is now home to a pair of beavers named Hazel and Chompy, who were freed so that one day the otters could live freely in England like they used to. he.

The new home for the rodent couple is the Ewhurst Park estate owned by Malaysian actress and model Mandy Lieu. The actress worked hand-in-hand with experts to build the enclosure with the necessary requirements to offer a safe home for the first pair of otters to be reintroduced to Britain.

These rodents will over time greatly improve the health of the pond by creating dams to trap sediment that is currently seeping up from the ground and making the water cloudy. In addition, they will promote the creation of new wetlands, very important habitats for wildlife species such as insects, birds and fish.

AND ON THIS RETURN JOURNEY, AFTER SUFFERING A DESTRUCTIVE LOCAL EXTENCE, THE OFFERS RETURNED TO BRITISH, WITH THE HOPE THAT IN THE FUTURE THEY COULD BE FREE SWIMMING AS FOLLOWING.
