CIt aims to provide students with information about the Chevening Scholarship programme, designed for future leaders from around the world who wish to pursue a one-year Master’s degree in the UK.Department of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, UNAM held outreach.
In “Dr. Fernando Ocaranza”, Rachel Brazier, Deputy British Ambassador to Mexico, expressed her delight at seeing the students “interested in experiencing new adventures, facing new challenges and changing their lives. Essentially, these scholarships are golden tickets, offering life experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Globally, our university represents world-class education, which makes us very proud.”
He also commented that this year marks 200 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United Kingdom, a bond that has been strengthened not only economically and politically, but also through cultural, gastronomic, musical and educational exchanges: “With 38 per cent of Nobel Laureates and 55 per cent of world leaders educated in the UK, you could be next. Every trip enriches us and changes our perspective on life, which is why I hope to hear from you soon, I wish you the greatest success on your journey to Chevening.”
Meanwhile, Kimi Yoshimura, Chevening Program Officer in Mexico, explained that this is a master’s scholarship program that is available at more than 100 universities in the UK. This call is open every year from September to November, and those who wish to apply can apply regardless of age, gender or religious beliefs, as long as they have a leadership profile, Mexican citizenship, have a bachelor’s degree, two years of work experience, have not received previous support from the British government and, after the exchange, return to their country for at least two years.
Mariela Garfias, Program Manager for Chevening in Mexico, reports that applications are made online via the website www.chevening.org. This part of the procedure includes explaining, through clear examples, your leadership and influence skills; show how this experience will help you achieve your goals; how they plan to network and establish relationships in the UK; and explain their short-term and long-term plans after completing their master’s degree, namely how they will contribute to the interests of Mexico.

Andrés Quintero Leyra, graduate of the Faculty of Medicine’s Bachelor of Surgery and Chevening scholarship recipient, shares his experience from the application process to his return to Mexico, and encourages those to apply for scholarships without fear of rejection: “Explain clearly what you want to achieve and what you expect at the end of the master’s degree. Take advantage of the network of contacts you will make during this experience, as they will be people you can collaborate with throughout your professional life.”.
