Demi Vollering won the Tour de Romandie on Sunday. After achieving a double on Saturday, the SD Worx racer no longer experienced problems in the final stage of the three-day race. Fem van Empel missed out on victory that day.
On the nearly 132 kilometer hilly stage between Vernier and Nyon, a group of six emerged in the early stages with Loes Adegeest, Mischa Bredewold, Kristen Faulkner, Jolanda Neff, Niamh Fisher-Black and Mireia Benito. The early run was caught by the peloton 50 kilometers from the finish line.
In the final phase the peloton was reduced significantly, after which Liane Lippert was the first to launch an attack. Only Niewiadoma, the leader of Vollering and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig could follow him. Due to the difficulty of cooperation between runners, several riders can join forces, resulting in a sprint.
Jumbo-Visma rider and world cyclo-cross champion Van Empel looked for victory with 300 meters to go, but was beaten by Lippert in the final meters. SD Worx, Vollering’s team, did not encounter any obstacles in the final phase and won the second edition of the women’s Tour de Romandie with a six second advantage over Katarzyna Niewiadoma.
Earlier this year, Vollering won the Tour de France Femmes, Strade Bianche and Dwars door Vlaanderen. Last year, South Africa’s Ashleigh Moolman won at Romandie, ahead of Annemiek van Vleuten. Vollering then finished in sixteenth position.
