Autonomous vessels are allowed to enter British and Danish waters more easily

Our country is nothing but a pioneer in the field of autonomous ships. Last year, the Belgian unmanned vessel Mahi 2 sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, powered entirely by solar energy – a world first. Many Belgian maritime companies are also investing in this technology.

As one of the first countries in the world, Belgium has had a legal framework for a pilot project for unmanned ships in the North Sea since 1 July 2021. Thanks to cooperation with the UK and Denmark, these ships can cross the borders of the two countries more easily. Instead of having to apply for two or three permits, it is now possible to immediately indicate what conditions an autonomous vessel must meet to sail in British or Danish waters.

Minister Van Quickenborne emphasized that the agreement provides impetus for the further development of autonomous ships. “Technological developments and innovations at sea are occurring rapidly. As a government, we are ensuring the right regulatory framework so that Belgian companies can become pioneers in this innovative technology.” He called on other North Sea countries to join the agreement.
