Scientists from Aarhus University in Denmark examined the genetic data of 350,000 people from a biological data bank Biobankwhich is based in the UK.
Doug’s speedthe study authors, stated that 90% of people, whose data were used in the study, started smoking before the age of 20 years and usually received treatment for mental disorders after the age of 30 years.
“Smoking causes mental illness. Smoking causes mental illness. Although not the only cause, smoking increases the risk of hospitalization due to mental illness by 250%,” said Speed.
Scientists who collaborated with two researchers from Canada also suggested that smoking causes depression and bipolar disorder.
Speed also said they found genes “associated with smoking” in those who use tobacco products.
“People who carry genes associated with smoking but do not smoke are less likely to have mental disorders compared with people who carry these genes and smoke,” the researchers wrote.
On the other hand, scientists state that the biological mechanisms why smoking causes decreased mental health are still not fully understood.
