The Dutch swimmer took third place in the 4×100 meters free final on Sunday at the World Cup in Fukuoka, Japan. Arno Kamminga did not remove a single stitch on the 100 meter school circuit.
Kim Busch, Milou van Wijk, Sam van Nunen and Marrit Steenbergen clocked 3:35.50 in the series. Steenbergen in particular made an impression. He set his best split time of 52.13 and was also the fastest across the field. The free 4×100 meter final is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
Dutch swimmers were always the top favorites in the 4×100 meters more than a decade ago. With the separation of Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Inge Dekker, and Femke Heemskerk, their dominance receded even though there was still a chance for a medal.
The Australian women were the fastest on Sunday with a time of 3:31.52, ahead of the United States team (3.33.34).
Steenbergen, who won no fewer than four gold medals at the European Championships in Rome last year, had already competed in the 200-metre individual medley the previous Sunday. He then reached the semifinals in thirteenth place.
Kamminga started strongly in the World Cup
Kamminga placed second in the school’s 100 meter semi-final. With a record time of 58.71, the Olympic silver medalist only had to lose to China’s Qin Haiyang (58.26).
Multiple Olympic champion Adam Peaty, who seduced Kamminga during the Tokyo Olympics, will not be participating in the World Cup due to mental issues.
Nyls Korstanje advanced to the semifinals of the 50 meter butterfly. He had his eighth run in the series at 23.19.
On the other hand, Imani de Jong did not qualify in the 400 meter free. The debutant finished twentieth in 4:12.03. Thomas Jansen missed the 400 meter substitution final. He posted his twelfth time in the series at 4.16.00.
