Health.- WHO confirmed more than 1,000 cases of monkeypox and three deaths in the last month

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 1,020 new cases of monkeypox (mox), which is a 1.2 percent increase in the total number of positives, and three deaths since its last report, dated March 14. July, and until August 9 .

In the past two weeks, the WHO report notes that reported cases have increased in the Western Pacific region, Europe and the Americas. A new country, Trinidad and Tobago, has reported its first three cases of mpox.

The number of new weekly cases reported worldwide decreased by 58.9 percent in the week of July 31 to August 6 (37 cases), compared to the week of July 24 to July 30 (90 cases).

The West Pacific Region reported the most (158/293; 77.2%) cases in the last three weeks (17 July to 8 August), due to the large increase in China. From 28 June to 8 August, eight countries had recorded increases in cases compared to the previous three weeks, with China (140 vs. 59; 140%) and Portugal (37 vs. 12; 201%) leading the way. .

As of August 9, 2023, new cases have been reported within the last 21 days, the maximum incubation period of the disease, in 15 of the 113 affected countries, five from each of the Americas, Europe and the Western Pacific region. Between July 27 and August 9, there were a total of three deaths, all in the United States.

However, the WHO highlighted that transmission of the mpox virus remained “low” in most countries where cases were reported, and the main epidemiological and clinical characteristics of the cases remained “stable”.

Since 1 January 2022, a cumulative total of 89,308 cases of mpox, 152 of which were fatal, have been reported to WHO from 113 countries across six WHO Regions.

The ten countries reporting the highest cumulative number of cases worldwide are the United States (30,446), Brazil (10,967), Spain (7,560), France (4,150), Colombia (4,090), Mexico (4,045), Peru (3,812), United Kingdom (3,771). ), Germany (3,694) and Canada (1,496). Together, these countries account for 82.9 percent of cases reported worldwide.
