Webfleet has broken a Guinness world record by traveling 500.8 km in an electric van on a single battery charge. Webfleet sponsored Kevin Booker, Sam Clarke and Fergal McGrath broke world records in a Fiat E-Scudo equipped with Bridgestone Duravis tires.
Using independently verified video, odometer, GPS and battery level data, Webfleet shows that the compact van, with a 75kWh battery and 330km WLTP, traveled an average of 7.2km per kilowatt hour (kWh) on its route across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire .
The journey takes 13 hours and nine minutes and is done during the day. The Fiat E-Scudo was not modified for record trials and the route combined urban and rural roads to mimic ‘real world’ conditions.
The E-Scudo was chosen for this challenge due to its excellent range and comfort-oriented design, which gives the driver the feeling of driving like a car. Also, the sound insulation of the van is top notch, so shaking and vibration are minimized.
“This extraordinary achievement is a testament to the determination and technological ingenuity of all involved,” said Beverley Wise, Webfleet UK Regional Director for Bridgestone Mobility Solutions. “We are very happy to be the holder of the Guinness world record. The previous record of 416.5km was set in the US and the arrival of this record in the UK is symbolic of our national push to become a global leader in e-mobility. The record demonstrates not only the capabilities of Bridgestone electric vans and advanced tires for business and urban mobility, but also the impact drivers can have on electric vehicle (EV) energy consumption.”
Taco van der Leij, Vice President Fleet Management Solutions Europe for Bridgestone Mobility Solutions, said: “Connected EV data plays a critical role in electrifying mobility, enabling commercial fleets to monitor driver behavior, compare their energy performance and even calculate the kinetic energy recovered through braking. regenerative to provide targeted training where it is needed most.”
The tire Webfleet selected for the trial, the Bridgestone Duravis tire, was seen as a key part of the world record trial, offering excellent performance and low rolling resistance.
Damien Dally, Managing Director Fiat UK: “We are delighted that the Fiat E-Scudo has achieved its first Guinness world record. And it’s an impressive title with the longest distance a van has ever traveled on a single charge. The E-Scudo already has a range of 330 kilometers, which is perfect for companies looking to switch to electric propulsion, and it shows how far the van can go beyond the range of the WLTP when driven efficiently.”
McGrath and Booker both held the previous records for petrol, diesel and energy consumption in an electric car. They now hold six and four world records, respectively, while Clarke has now completed first.
“Reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality is one of the top priorities of governments around the world, especially in cities with some of the worst air pollution,” said McGrath. “For example, we saw the recent expansion of the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) from 23 August 2023. Trucks and vans mainly run on diesel fuel, so it is important that the transition to fully electric without exhaust fumes is as smooth as possible. Possible. By setting this world record, we hope to demonstrate that all-electric commercial vehicles can meet and exceed real-life customer requirements, especially in large cities.”
AA Chairman Edmund King OBE is delighted that AA has provided official judging and its leading EV support service for the record attempt. “Congratulations to the Webfleet team for setting a Guinness world record and showing what is possible within EV range and how drivers can impact range. The feat was even more impressive because it was done in a van. We know some drivers are concerned about range, so it was positive to show how far an electric vehicle can go on a single charge. We are proud to be the number one provider of EV driver support services, helping individuals and fleets to choose electrification with confidence, so it’s been great to play our part in achieving this world record.”
