Charles III was crowned King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on Saturday. 74-year-old Charles received the British crown on his head under the watch of 2,200 participants and millions of television viewers.
Charles has been king since the death of his mother Elizabeth II on September 8. He was formally proclaimed king on 10 September. Today he really got the crown on his head.
His wife Camilla was also crowned. She can now officially call herself queen. Prior to this she had the title queen consort. Thus, a distinction was made between him and the late Queen Elizabeth.
The coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey began at noon and lasted less than two hours. Charles and Camilla departed Buckingham Palace at 11:20 a.m., following a route through central London. Along the route were many enthusiastic fans, but also opponents of the monarchy.
Charles who is now 74 years old is the King of Great Britain, which consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The first three countries together form the United Kingdom. As king of England, he is also the head of state including Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
