AMERSFORT Dozens of Amersfoort residents celebrated with De Stier at the roundabout Sunday night that Recep Tayyip Erdogan won Turkey’s election. Many Turks got into cars with the Turkish national flag to drive around and honked or waved the flag in the street. Police have arrested one person, who allegedly threw all kinds of things at the Turkish people who were partying.

Erdogan is popular among the Dutch-Turkish. During the first round of Turkish elections earlier this month, Erdogan received 68.76 percent of the Turkish-Dutch vote, according to Turkey’s Anadolu news agency. 28.52 percent voted for his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

The Turkish president also proved to be the most popular candidate among voters in the Netherlands during the second round of the presidential election. He received 70.5 percent of the vote and his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu 29.6 percent, Turkey’s Anadolu news agency reported.

Nearly 146,000 votes were cast in the Netherlands, 740 of which were declared invalid. The turnout was 53.2 percent. That was higher than in the first round, when 50.4 percent of voters went to the polls. In the first round in the Netherlands, 68.4 percent of the vote went to Erdogan and 28.8 percent to Kilicdaroglu, news agencies reported earlier.

Outside Turkey, according to Anadolu, nearly 1.8 million votes were cast, with 59.4 percent going to Erdogan. The sitting president also received more votes than Kilicdaroglu in many countries around the Netherlands, including Germany, Belgium and France. The largest group of Turks living abroad live in Germany. Kilicdaroglu is the favorite in the United States, Great Britain, Spain and Italy, among others.
