On May 18, Undersecretary of Economy and International Cooperation, Ambassador Hugo Rivera, and Ambassador of the Dominican Republic in Jamaica, Angie Shakira, were in the city of Kingston on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic, Roberto Álvarez, to participate in the FORUM UNITED KINGDOM- 11th CARIBBEAN (11th British-Caribbean Forum).
This political conclave is very important for the Dominican Republic, because after the UK’s exit from the European Union, there is interest in further deepening the UK’s diplomatic and commercial relations with the region, this is a very good opportunity. to strengthen the collaborative and friendly relationship between the Caribbean and the UK, on issues of strategic relevance, while enabling us to address important issues affecting our region.
During the forum, the UK along with the Caribbean discussed a broad agenda on transcendental issues to promote growth and sustainable development on issues related to trade, investment, security cooperation, defence, migration, education, health, climate change, energy, justice , international candidates, and in particular, the situation of Haiti, Belize and Guyana.
At the end of the discussion, the parties signed an Action Plan for a period of 2 years, in which they agreed to work together to achieve the stated goals.
The chairmen of this forum are the Honorable Senator, Kamina Johnson Smith, Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Chair of the CARICOM Council on Foreign Relations and Community Relations and Deputy Chair of the 11th UK-Caribbean Forum; and The Honorable James Cleverly, British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Deputy Chair of the 11th British-Caribbean Forum.
