Britain’s largest police force, the Met Police, is guilty of racism, homophobia and misogyny. London Police can no longer rely on public trust, according to a report published on Tuesday.
MP Louise Casey investigates Met functioning after the 2021 murder of Sarah Everard. This young London woman was raped, murdered, and burned to death by a British police officer who pretended to arrest her. The perpetrator was sentenced to life imprisonment. The murders raised great concerns about the safety of women on the road.
According to Casey, the majority of Londoners have lost faith in the “fortress of men” in the police force. The corps was broken and rotten from within, said the 363-page report.
Female police officers are constantly discriminated against, officers are racist on the job and there is deep-rooted homophobia within the organization, Casey said. The top of the corps was said to be “in denial” about this.
The Met has failed to protect the public from agents who harass women, Casey concludes. If there is no improvement, the London police force should be disbanded. The Met has more than 43,000 employees.
Police Chief Mark Rowley offered Londoners a response to BBC his apologies. “Terrible,” said the police chief, adding that the report sparked all kinds of emotions in him. “Anger, frustration, and shame.”
