“We understand the needs of retailers and farmers”

Israeli greenhouse seed developer Harmoniz uses advanced molecular biology and cultivation technology to supply supermarkets worldwide with great taste, freshness and high resistance to viruses.

Fusion complete
Harmoniz recently made its debut following the completion of a merger between TomaTech, a seed breeding company, and Nirit Seeds, a developer of hybrid vegetable seeds. The company is based in Israel and has breeding and marketing activities in Spain, Italy, Netherlands, UK, Greece, Mexico, Canada, South Africa and Morocco.

The combination of TomaTech and Nirit expands the Harominz team, which now has more than 80 members worldwide, including molecular biologists, breeders and horticulturists. In addition, the company has expanded its operations in Israel, with a logistics center and headquarters in Kibbutz Kfar Menahem.

Retailers and farmers
Harmoniz serves retailers and farmers by responding to their unique needs. For retailers, they develop products with long lasting freshness, available 52 weeks a year, every day of the week, enabling farmers to get more value from their seeds. These include high yields and good taste, color, texture and plant resistance.

For example, Harmoniz was able to identify DNA markers that confer resistance to Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV). This virus has been wreaking havoc on tomato farmers around the world since 2014.

Heated and not heated
As part of their commitment to sustainability, Harmoniz grows tomato varieties in both heated and unheated greenhouses, resulting in a uniform product available year-round. Better postharvest freshness means produce can be transported to customers in excellent condition, preventing food wastage.

Ofer Ben Zvi, director of Harmoniz: “Our mission is clear: to grow and sell vegetables that people love to eat and farmers love to grow while maintaining innovation, creativity and a focus on the consumer at the end of the supply chain. We offer a harmony of taste, technology and innovation , to bring you the best dining experience every time.”

β€œAt a time when consumers are facing shortages in vegetable supply, in countries like the UK, our work to keep vegetable supply chains operating as efficiently as possible is even more relevant and important.”
