Australia has now also introduced a TikTok ban for civil servants. This was announced by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. An increasing number of countries are banning officials and politicians from using the app because of concerns about espionage.

Federal government employees will no longer be allowed to use TikTok – a social network where you can create and share videos – on their work phones due to security concerns, Australian media reports. Australia’s choice is in line with several other countries which previously announced bans on applications for civil servants and politicians. ‘You could safely conclude that Australia is a little behind on this,’ said technology editor Mats Akkerman.

TikTok is owned by China’s ByteDance and there are fears that the data TikTok collects will end up in the hands of Chinese authorities. “China still denies it to this day,” said Akkerman.

Countries that have imposed similar bans on TikTok include France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. All European institutions have now announced a ban on the use of the app on mobile phones and work computers. In the Netherlands, the cabinet has asked government officials to remove the app.
