British Minister of Finance, Rishi Sunak; and Health, Sajid Javid, this Tuesday (5/7/2022) announced his resignation after losing faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The departure of two top executives weakened Johnson’s position, which was beset by scandals. Even if there were more departures, the government could fall.
“The public should expect that government administration will be carried out properly, competently and sincerely,” which is not currently the case, said Sunak in his resignation letter.
He also said he was “loyal” and publicly supported the Conservative leader, even when he disagreed with him “personally”. However, Johnson was unwilling to make “tough calls” on the economy and that set them apart in their approach.
Meanwhile, Javid points out that he cannot “in good conscience continue to serve in this government”.
“I’m a team man by instinct but Britons have the right to expect integrity in government,” he said.
The former health minister also stated that the problems facing the Conservative Party “would not be resolved under” Johnson, which is why he had “lost faith in him”.
