Sarina Wiegman was a semifinalist with England at the European Championships in her home country. It looked bleak for the home country after Spain 0-1, but England fought back via comeback: 2-1. An unforgettable day for Wiegman.
“The level of competition is very high,” Wiegman told the BBC afterwards. “I haven’t experienced that much. We know that Spain are a very good team, especially in possession. And we did quite well too. I’m very proud of the team, it’s amazing. You can really feel the crowd behind us, it’s a home advantage.”
No stress
Even though it was 0-1, Wiegman was a little worried. “We were behind and knew we had to do something. Then we scored quickly and we were able to return to our normal system. Of course I was a little worried, otherwise I wouldn’t change the system a bit. It’s good that it worked,” said Dutch coach.
“It was a crazy day,” said Wiegman, who heard too late that he was still allowed to sit on the couch after his coronavirus infection. “I joined the team late, prepared everyone and tried to stay calm. I will never forget this day.”
England will play Sweden or Belgium in the semifinals. A match against his old team Orange is only possible in the final.
