BAAR “Last year we walked in Professorenwijk, now addresses elsewhere in Baarn have also been registered.” Maria Bakker organizes children’s Baarn Halloween activities through her Facebook page. On Monday, October 31, Baarn children are allowed to knock on the doors of registered residents to try to loosen the candy.
“On October 31st, children dress up and ring or knock on the door of a nearby house decorated with pumpkins and lights as it gets dark and scream trick-or-treat!, where a choice is given between being the victim of ridicule (a trick) or giving something tasty (a treat, usually candy). Residents then give candy to children,” says Wikipedia as a description of Halloween. Traditionally, Halloween is mainly celebrated in Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, countries where Saint Martin is not celebrated.
The Feast of Saint Martin is celebrated on November 11, or sometimes the night before. It is the name day of Martinus van Tours. Sint Maarten is known because as a soldier he gave half of his cloak to a poor beggar and after a dream chose to continue living as a Christian.
The children and their caretakers walked through the Baarn on Mondays between 5.30pm and 8pm. “I especially love Halloween for children, I have a daughter who loves to dress up,” Maria Bakker explains her motivation. You can register via the Baarn children’s activities Facebook page. The message can also be found on the Baarnsche Courant Facebook page.
Apart from that, Maria Bakker also wants to arrange the Sint Maarten route on Friday 11 November. That day, children can go for a walk between 17.30 and 20.30.
