No honeymoon for Rishi Sunak
Bad polls, higher taxes and Brexit
Last week, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, presented his fall budget. At the end of September, the Tories under Prime Minister Liz Truss announced their largest package of tax cuts yet. Minister Hunt is now presenting the reverse to the British.
Jeremy Hunt announces a new government spending package that will be funded by taxpayer money. This has always been very difficult for the right wing of the ruling party. And that is reflected in the polls and the fall in membership of the Conservative Party. For several weeks now, Richard Tice’s right-wing Brexiteer Reform Party has been on the rise. The points percentage that this party pits against the Tories makes the polls for Rishi Sunak and his cabinet look even worse.
Brexit resistance
There is also serious controversy over Brexit. Everything seems to indicate that the British government is viewing its trade relationship with the European Union ‘the Swiss way’. It’s all readable Sunday time. This means that the UK economy will be fully aligned with the EU, and will therefore also enjoy almost free movement of people and goods. For the UK to achieve this status, it must also accept EU regulation. The idea, Britain returning to the EU half a leg, caused much disquiet among the Tories. Like the devil out of the box, Nigel Farage also reappears. He threatened to re-enter politics with a ‘Swiss-style Brexit’.
The British government, led by Rishi Sunak, is now denying the Swiss scenario in all languages. Commentators saw Jeremy Hunt’s hand in it, politicians have always been fierce critics of Brexit. It is possible that this spat will end up being a teacup storm, but it will spoil the image of ‘Brexiteer’ Rishi Sunak. He already faces the near impossible task of turning around the polls that are so bad. Moreover, the worse the UK economy gets, the more prominent the Brexit story will be back in the spotlight.
