Alaa Abdelfatah’s family again asked for a presidential pardon to release him

Cairo, Nov. 11 (EFE) which one is left since 2019.

“Last June I applied for presidential clemency for my brother Alaa. Today I have filed again to reaffirm my full dedication to any legal avenue that can help resolve my brother’s problem,” the activist’s sister, Mona Seif, said on Twitter.

This comes after members of the Presidential Pardons Committee criticized on the same social network that the Alaa family did not apply for an amnesty when the agency was reactivated in mid-2022 by Egyptian President Abdelfatah al Sisi, something Seif denies.

The committee has pardoned at least 766 prisoners of conscience, according to Amnesty International, which denounced that Egypt has so far arrested and imprisoned more than 1,500 people for political reasons.

It was precisely today that Al Sisi met with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, in a meeting on the sidelines of the COP27 Climate Summit and where the Egyptian defended his human rights strategy and the work of this pardon committee.

The situation of Alaa Abdelfatah has been one of the central points of COP27, ever since the activist started a hunger strike at the start of the summit which added to more than 200 days of her hunger strike to protest her detention, described as “unfair” by various NGOs.

This issue has caused great concern for his life and has led other countries such as the UK, France and Germany to address the issue head-on with Al Sisi.

So far, Egyptian authorities have denied access to the prison for the family of the activist and lawyer, whose health condition is unknown, although the Egyptian Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement on Thursday that his “health condition is fine”.

Since Al Sisi took power in 2013, Alaa has spent most of his time behind bars, having served five years for organizing protests and being sentenced again in 2021 to five years in prison for “spreading fake news”. .
