British YouTuber True Geordie – real name Brian Davis – has lost fitness clothing company Gymshark as a sponsor of his show. This came after he joked that controversial Islamic influencer Andrew Tate should blow himself up.
In a live broadcast, Geordie, who loves to talk about sports, was asked if she dared to fight Tate.
Not a very strange question: Tate is a former kickboxer. And the two contradict each other. Geordie often disagrees with Tate, who has been kicked off most platforms for homophobic, racist, and especially misogynistic videos.
Geordie replied that Tate, who had recently converted to Islam, had to blow himself up – to prove that he was truly a Muslim.
It doesn’t match the Tate, to put it mildly. In response he said somewhat threateningly: ‘To offend my religion and billions of people with stupid jokes about blowing ourselves up, and then think that there are no consequences? You will soon learn otherwise, my friend.
In a new video (photo) that has now hit a million views, Geordie apologizes. He stressed, tearfully, that it was a joke and he didn’t really think that Muslims just blew themselves up. He also didn’t want Tate to really die, he added.
But Gymshark, a major sportswear company that sponsors multiple influencers, is still pulling out of Geordie. The company said it disagreed with his comments and would not tolerate “racism, discrimination and Islamophobia” – and that Geordie’s sponsorship had been suspended immediately.
