The British Conservative Party will hold a four-day party conference in Birmingham from Sunday. The party is currently on the verge of plunging into opinion polls and has just found a new leader and prime minister, Liz Truss. He will close congress with a speech on Wednesday. The first prominent speaker was the Minister of Finance Kwasi Kwarteng, Monday afternoon.
Recent tax measures by Kwarteng led to a sharp decline in the pound exchange rate starting September 23 and major unrest across the country. This is a country where places are prepared for winter for people who can no longer afford heating at home. Multiple crises undermined confidence in the party that has supplied the prime minister since 2010.

The main opposition Labor Party saw 54 percent of those polled behind it in a recent poll and the Conservatives have dropped to 21 percent. Labor has not been this popular in opinion polls since the late 1990s.

Truss became the successor to controversial Conservative leader Boris Johnson, two days before Queen Elizabeth’s death. He was the fifteenth Prime Minister to appoint Elizabeth, who died on September 8. In the UK, the political fallout of a prime minister, like Johnson’s, does not automatically mean new elections, but the ruling party may continue with another prime minister.
