UK alarm over ‘zombie’ pigeon phenomenon

Unusual ‘zombie’ dove images are changing social networks. This unusual phenomenon recorded in the UK is caused by a highly contagious virus that causes dire symptoms in birds.

Over the course of a few days, pigeons in this country began to suffer from paramyxovirus, also known as PPMV or Newcastle disease, which caused many of the symptoms that began to be called ‘zombies’.

According to local media, the birds have They twist their necks, become emaciated, walk in circles or zigzags, have tremors or paralysis of the wings and legs, and have green stools.

The highly contagious virus has spread rapidly in Jersey pigeons, according to the Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

However, it is feared that it could circulate throughout the British bird population. Therefore, the authorities have asked to report the case immediately, as the poultry must be slaughtered, given the high transmission rate.

VERY TRANSMISSION VIRUS

These outbreaks are caused, according to experts, by the time of year because the virus lingers longer in the wet and cold months. Also, the virus spreads between pigeons and poultry.

This disease, which is highly contagious and spreads through feces and other secretions, has no treatment. For this reason many birds die within a few days.

According to the World Health Organization, Newcastle disease is zoonoses very mild, i.e. animal diseases that can infect humans and can cause conjunctivitis in humans, but are usually very mild and limited.
