Google must pay Mexican lawyers millions of dollars in damages | technology

A court in Mexico City has ordered Google to pay attorneys $245 million (more than 233 million euros) who said Google ran a blog in which it was accused of money laundering, among other things. Google has said it will appeal.

Ulrich Richter Morales stated that he was also linked to document falsification and influencing power through blogs. The lawyer himself said he asked Google in 2015 to remove the anonymous blog. He filed a complaint for “moral depravity” and was successful.

US technology companies opposed the decision, calling it “arbitrary, redundant and without any basis whatsoever”. In addition, Google believes that the ruling undermines “freedom of expression and other basic principles. We believe that federal courts will act in accordance with these principles.”

Google was recently ordered to pay damages in a similar lawsuit in Australia. It was about a former politician who was insulted and abused on YouTube videos to such an extent that he became depressed and left politics.

The man, John Barilaro, sued Google as the parent company of YouTube. Google refused to remove the video and the judge ordered the court to pay 715,000 Australian dollars (480,500 euros).
