A hologram of a loved one who died at a funeral, we know that now. But ask a holographic question and then get an answer? New technology allows a deceased woman in England to speak to her loved ones at a gathering shortly after she is cremated.
In July, Marina Smith, who died in June at the age of 87, appeared on screen at a gathering. He gave a short speech, after which the bereaved relatives could ask all sorts of questions to Smith’s digital clone, report British media. The hologram was created by the company StoryFile, of which Smith’s son, Stephan Smith, is co-founder and CEO.
The questions were recorded earlier this year, when Marina Smith was alive, using a computer and a webcam. Among other things, he answered questions about his childhood. “This raises a difficult topic. Like his parents’ divorce and life as an immigrant from India,” his son told British newspapers Telegraph. “The closest relatives were amazed at my mother’s newfound honesty at the meeting.” Marina Smith has always been ashamed of her past. “But when asked about this, he told us about his childhood in India, which we know nothing about.”

As of this week, the new technology is available in the UK. In the more expensive version of StoryFile, interviews are recorded with twenty synchronized cameras. The experts then processed the material to train digital clones of the deceased. This is necessary so that the hologram can answer questions in ‘natural language’.
Unlike deepfake videos, the system does not put words in the mouth of the digital clone. If he didn’t have an answer, he would encourage the closest relatives to ask another question.
British company previously worked with Star Trekactor William Shatner. With his hologram, the Canadian actor wants to preserve his legacy for generations to come.
