In Great Britain, more and more votes are being garnered for new elections, as the Conservatives move towards a fifth prime minister in 6 years. According to the rules, the party can again appoint a new leader and continue. But how sustainable is it for the Tories to keep changing prime ministers indefinitely until time runs out?

“I think we should first hold an election, so the UK can decide for themselves whether they need a strong stable leader, or a ruling Labor party,” said CDA MEP Jeroen Lenaers. He thought this Tories faction was over. “They have lost the trust of the British people.” Lenears stated that for Europe it didn’t matter who came. “As long as it is someone with a strong mandate, who is a credible partner in negotiations.”

‘Big middle finger against democratic parties’

“It’s always good when the other side can try it,” said Erik Gerritsen, former secretary general at VWS. But he warned of a growing interest in populism. “You see that in England, Holland, Italy and America, many people vote for politicians who are proven to have done things that are not in the interests of the people themselves.” Gerritsen described these voters as a fast-growing group who ended up on the other side of the inequality line. “They no longer care who is in power, they want to raise the big middle finger against the more democratic parties.”

Gerritsen wondered whether Labor, if it were to come to power through the current election, would do much better than the Conservatives. “Parties that used to be sensible are also becoming more populist. They’re just being sucked in.”
