Joel likes to draw inspiration from artists who are special to him in his music. Also for some of the songs on the album An Innocent Man, which is part of Uptown Girl. For this album, Joel took inspiration from an important 1960s artist in his youth; in this case from American singer and pop group Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The group is known for songs such as December 1963 (Oh, What a Night) and Big Girls Don’t Cry.
Uptown Girl looks good. It reached number 3 in the United States and even became a number 1 hit in the UK. It was the second best-selling single of 1983 in the UK and even the 19th best-selling single of the 1980s, with 975,000 copies sold. This continued to increase until 2017, when it reached more than one million copies.
Westlife
This song has also been covered by several artists in recent years. The most successful cover was the Irish Boyband Westlife which released the song on 6 March 2001 as the lead single from their album. Our Own World. They scored a number 1 hit in the UK and the song became the group’s best-selling single to date.
