Concerns about harm to health
New transmission towers are installed for the 5G network, which provides faster mobile internet, among other things. Critics expressed their concern about radiation from the poles, claiming that they were harmful to health. But various studies show that there is no indication at all.
In recent years, cell towers have been burned more frequently in the Netherlands. Six suspects were arrested in connection with various fires in 2020. Some of the suspects said they were afraid of the launch of new 5G networks. Whether the fire was recently started for the same reason is still being investigated by the police.
Mobile accessibility is reduced in this region
A fire in a transmission tower can have major consequences. The loss of cell towers can lead to reduced cellular accessibility in the region. Emergency services may be less accessible in the area as people cannot reach 112.
In the event of a transmission tower failure, emergency masts are installed as soon as possible to ensure mobile traffic can resume. Moreover, normal pylons have been extra protected since the fire in 2020. The Ministry of Justice and Security never wanted to explain exactly how, so as not to “make people think”.
The Netherlands is not the only country tackling pole fires. Poles have also been burned overseas. This happened in the UK, for example, after the spread of fake news online in which a link was made between 5G radiation and the coronavirus.
