Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has died ‘peacefully’ at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace reports. The king breathed his last in the Scottish castle of Balmoral in front of family members. Elizabeth was on the throne for 70 years, making her the longest-reigning monarch in British history.

When Elizabeth was born in 1926, it looked like she would never ascend the throne, her uncle Albert being first in line to the throne. When Edward stepped down after just one year at the end of 1936 due to his divorced relationship with American Wallis Simpson, Elizabeth’s father George VI became king and she became crown princess.
