Record number of refugees crossing the Channel to England | NOW

The UK Ministry of Defense saw a record number of refugees crossing the Channel on Monday. Authorities registered 1,295 migrants who crossed the waters between Britain and France within 24 hours.

The new diary is not an isolated fact. The UK has seen a sharp increase in the number of refugees traveling to the UK for some time.

So far this year 22,670 migrants have been registered, nearly double the same time last year. Throughout 2021 there were 28,526 refugees. This year, authorities estimate the total at 60,000.

The previous day’s record was 1,185 people. It happened in November 2021.

Earlier this year, British authorities said they expected the number of refugees to fall sharply, as a large network of people smugglers had been severed. According to the European police service Europol, the network is responsible for the crossing of tens of thousands of refugees in a year and a half.

More and more illegal refugees all over Channel

Since 2020, more and more migrants are trying to reach the UK illegally via the Channel. A lot of effort was put into it, especially in the summer. Then the weather conditions are usually good.

Britain is trying to reduce the number of attempts through decisive action. For example, higher penalties were given to people smugglers and Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government devised plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

The rising trend led to tensions between Britain and France. The British government argued that France had not done enough to prevent boat migration.

According to French police, not all ships can be stopped because of the large number of arrivals and the long coastline. Also, smugglers will know how to evade security. From Paris there are allegations that British labor laws encourage boat migrants.
