Scott Neill he never imagined that a scratch on his knee could take his life. It was an unremarkable accident in Swansea, Wales, which caused him unparalleled “suffering” and “tears of pain”, and his leg swelled to twice its size.
Those small scratches become necrotizing fasciitis (a bacterial infection that can be fatal if the wound becomes infected). Scott described the pain as unlike anything he had ever experienced before, to the point that upon arrival at the hospital he fainted.
The man is one of 500 people a year affected by the disease, so he had to undergo six operations during six weeks in hospital for the rare and life-threatening disease.
“I really can’t accept what has happened, It was the most excruciating pain I have ever experienced.Scott said, after months.
At the hospital, the doctors realized that necrotizing fasciitis he had “eaten” his quadriceps and knee muscles, so surgery focused on cutting off the dead part in a lengthy bid to prevent the infection from spreading through the 30-year-old’s legs and body.
“It was very difficult, I cried a lot,” the young man recalled. He emphasized, “Seeing your body looks really weird.” Specialists on the subject point out that in these cases early diagnosis can prevent death.
Fortunately, the operation was successful, the young man’s back muscles were used to replace the dead tissue and his leg was saved. After physical therapy and determination, she is able to walk on her own and says she appreciates being able to walk her dog and ride her skateboard.
Scott faces horrific physical and mental moments; However, this traumatic experience has given him a new zest for life.
“My mental health was very low before this, so there was only one way to get past it: deal with itsaid the young musician.
“I have to stay strong especially for my family. On the one hand, I am grateful for the experience because it showed me how to deal with trauma, there is only one way to get through it. Every trauma he went through before he had to bury him.”Scott explained to the BBC.
She also says she is grateful for being able to walk her dog, “jump on a skateboard, run and kick a ball.”
