Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced in parliament on Tuesday that he plans to hold another independence referendum on 19 October 2023. Sturgeon told the London government to seek permission to hold a consultative referendum. He hopes British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will approve a non-binding plebiscite.
However, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said shortly afterwards that he did not think the time was right for this, but that the government in London would study the proposal closely. The Scottish government will now go to the UK Supreme Court to investigate the legality of the new referendum.
Johnson has repeatedly expressed his opposition to the new plebiscite, so his position remains unchanged. However, Sturgeon insisted that Scotland could only gain independence through lawful means.

In 2014, a narrow majority in Scotland voted against independence from Britain. According to Sturgeon, the situation has changed since the country has left the European Union. In Scotland, the majority want to stay with the EU. The prime minister thinks his election victory last year was a clear mandate from the people for a new referendum, but recent polls show there is still no majority for Scotland’s independence from Britain.
