Monkeypox: Cases are declining globally, but increasing in America

It World Health Organization (WHO) said today that monkeypox cases fell last week worldwide, with the clear exception of America, where they are steadily increasing.

Laboratory confirmed cases rose to 41,664 in 96 countries and twelve deaths have been reported.

After four consecutive weeks of increasing the number infectionlast week gave a pause with 21% fewer new cases registered, which totaled 5,907.

“This reduction could reflect the first signs of a decline in cases in Europeunconfirmed”, shows weekly epidemiological reports from WHO dedicated to the monkeypox outbreak.

The outbreak began in Europe last May and is the first to be seen outside a group of countries in central Africa, where disease considered endemic.

It virus crossed the Atlantic quickly and cases began to rise sharply in United States of America and in several South American countries.

The US is now the country with the highest cumulative number of cases, followed by Spain, Brazil, Germany, the UK, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Peru and Portugal, in that order.

Iran and Indonesia each reported their first cases last week.

Monkeypox in Peru

It Minister of Health (minsa) reported on Tuesday that monkeypox cases have now risen to 1 207 at the national level when 19 new cases were detected. According to the agency, so far the disease is present in 16 regions of Peru.

Confirmed disease cases correspond to Metropolitan Lima (992), Province of Lima (10), Callao (75), La Libertad (54), Arequipa (31), Cusco (7), Piura (6), Ica (5), ncash (5), Cajamarca (2), Loreto (3), Junín (3), Huánuco (2), Lambayeque (4), Ucayali (4), Tacna (2) and San Martín (2).

The report recorded 608 cases in follow-up. On the other hand, the entity shows that 599 people were sent home for monkeypox. Likewise, they highlight that the detected cases have received medical assistance and follow-up according to their contacts.
