American meat giant Tyson Foods is to close its meat company in Wrexham in Wales. Tyson Foods has only owned the location since June of last year through its acquisition of BRF. The only remaining European branch is now in Oosterwolde.
Tyson Foods has announced that 71 jobs will be lost in Wrexham, but told the trade press that the entire plant will close by the end of this month. The American meat company also said it was not seeking a buyer for its Welsh branch. Wrexham’s former BRF has been a meat factory since 1962.
Acquisitions in Europe and Thailand
Tyson Foods completed the acquisition of activities in Europe and Thailand from Brazil’s BRF SA in June 2019. The American side paid $340 million for the acquisition. This involves chicken processing companies in Oosterwolde, Wrexham and four in Thailand.
“We are now better strategically positioned to serve our customers in Europe, the Middle East and Asia,” said CEO Noel White on that occasion. “Processing plants in the Netherlands and the UK are supported by in-house innovation capabilities to further develop processed chicken products for retail and foodservice customers across Europe.”
