Luis Fonsi scored a worldwide hit with Despacito and that success was partly due to Justin Bieber’s contribution.
“Justin heard the song and fell in love with it and did a remix,” Fonsi said in a conversation with Ryan Seacrest. “Because of him and everything that’s happening now, it’s starting in the United States.”
Originally a Spanish-language song, he was surprised by the song’s success in non-Spanish-speaking markets: “I’ve been doing this for about 19 years. My ninth album is coming out soon and I made this song because it has a good rhythm. At first I got a positive reaction from Europe and countries that don’t understand a word of Spanish but somehow they felt connected to the song.”
This Friday, Despacito also became the new UK number one, where I’m The One (which also features Justin Bieber) was knocked off the top spot. “It’s been a rollercoaster the last five months. The new Justin Bieber version has only been playing for about two or three weeks. It’s been a real journey. I wrote it on my guitar with a good friend and it took about three hours,” he told Official Charts on Friday.
