With Give It 2 Me, now her 52nd Top 40 hit, Madonna earned her fifth number 1 hit.
Madonna has shown over the years that she has a different side. For her eleventh studio album, she planned to present herself as the black Madonna. Although never shying away from criticism, it still seemed too controversial for her, after which she opted for a sexier version called Hard Candy. The choice was to represent her spicy yet sweet character. For the album she collaborated with Timbaland, Danja, Justin Timberlake and The Neptunes, among others. 4 Minutes became the album’s first number 1 hit. Of its successor, Give It 2 Me, she said: “It’s going to be a fantastic song to perform live. I can see everyone jumping already. It’s going to be ‘show me what you got and don’t hold me back’. But it’s also a great song to practice.”
Madonna wrote Give It 2 Me with Pharrell Williams and wanted to make a ‘feel good’ song with him. “The words are very autobiographical. ‘No limits, no limits’. That’s me. That’s my flirty side,” she said.
Give It 2 Me failed in the US, where she had scored her first top 3 hit with 4 Minutes. Based on downloads, the song reached number 57 in May, but had not yet been sent to radio. When it did, it barely made it to the charts and never returned. We saw a similar picture in the UK, where it initially peaked at number 73 before disappearing again. When it returned to the UK charts in the summer of 2008, it eventually climbed to number 7. Give It To Me spent six weeks at number one in our country. Give It 2 Me became Madonna’s 52nd Top 40 hit, shortly after she became the most successful artist in Top 40 history on June 14, 2008. At that time, Madonna surpassed The Rolling Stones, who remain the most successful band of all time for a total of 1,336 weeks. In 2016, Madonna lost the record again, after 415 weeks, when she was surpassed by Rihanna. In 2012 he increased his Top 40 hits to 55 with Give Me All Your Luvin’. Madonna was already the singer with the most hits in our country and then equaled BZN, who also increased their number of hits to 55 in 2007.
Madonna did not sit still when she released her fourteenth album, Madame X, in 2019. It became her ninth studio album to reach number one in the United States. The album did not produce any more hits.
