Last week Madonna made it into Tipparade with two songs. But is a return to the Top 40 also in the offing?
The second single from the album The Idol Vol 1., Popular, was released on June 2. The album contains music from the new HBO series The Idol which was released last week. On Popular, The Weeknd gets help from Playboi Carti and Madonna. The song has reached top 40 lists here and there in Switzerland, England, Norway, Ireland and Australia. In the Netherlands, Popular is actually moving towards the Top 40 as it scores across all pillars. Popular currently scores much better than Vulgar.
Vulgar, a collaboration between Madonna and Sam Smith, was a week behind Popular. The two recorded the song on February 6 after Sam and Madonna attended the Grammy Awards. Vulgar also scores across all pillars, but seems to struggle when it comes to streaming.
Madonna debuted on the Dutch charts in 1984 with Holiday. The single was in the Top 40 three times and, with a total of 21 weeks, was her longest-running hit. Less than a year and a half after her debut, Madonna scored her first number 1 hit with Into The Groove. Later, Who’s That Girl, Hung Up, 4 Minutes and Give It 2 Me also reached number 1. Hung Up, which was successful at the end of 2005, became his biggest hit.
Give Me All Your Luvin’ became Madonna’s 55th Top 40 hit. After that modest success, as songs featuring Nicki Minaj and MIA didn’t go beyond number 18, it became quiet around Madonna in the Top 40. Songs like Living For Love, Ghosttown and Medellin were released, but stuck in Tipparade.
If Vulgar or Popular makes the Top 40, Madonna will be in the Top 40 in five decades. In doing so, she matched Cher, who is the only singer to have achieved this so far.
Madonna is the singer with the most Top 40 hits: 55. Overall she is in second place behind record holder David Guetta (with 60 hits). Madonna shared her 55 hits with BZN and with new success she separated herself from the Dutch band.
