Top 40 has been the main hit list in the Netherlands since 1965. In the Today section we look back at events in pop music that happened exactly X years ago. In the Today episode: posthumous hit success for Jackie Wilson with Reet Petite.
In 1986, the British television channel BBC Two came up with the idea of giving a video clip to Reet Petite by Jackie Wilson. The BBC managed to make it into a cheerful claymation animated film that brought a lot of new attention to the 1957 song. On February 14, 1987 It seems that Reet Petite has received a warm welcome from Dutch society. The rock ‘n’ roll record then rose to first place in the Top 40. Unfortunately, Jackie Wilson couldn’t experience that moment.
On September 29, 1975, he performed the song Lonely Teardrops during a show. He fainted during the line ‘my heart cries’. The audience thought it was part of his act, but presenter Dick Clark realized something was wrong. Jackie Wilson actually had a heart attack. He was in a coma for the rest of his life. He died on January 21, 1984 at the age of only 49 years. Unfortunately, his relatives didn’t have the money to buy Wilson’s tombstone.
That changed in 1987. Reet Petite reached number one in the UK and Ireland in 1986. In 1987 it was the turn of the Netherlands and the top 5 was also achieved in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Norway and New Zealand. Jackie Wilson is back again in the picture and then in 1987 I’ve Got the Sweetest Feeling (originally from 1968) hit the charts. Thanks to the income earned throughout the year, his relatives finally had the money to arrange Jackie Wilson’s tombstone.
On May 24, 1986, Sam Cooke (died December 11, 1964) became the first artist to posthumously score a number 1 hit. He did so with Wonderful World. The 1960 song became popular again through Levi’s commercials. Less than nine months later, Jackie Wilson was second. Then, 2Pac († 1996; no. 1 in 1999 with Change), Herman Brood († 2001; no. 1 in 2001 with My Way), André Hazes († 2004; no. 1 in 2004 with Zij Believet In Mij en in 2007 with Stay With Me and Thank You My Friend) and Avicii († 2018; No. 1 in 2019 with SOS) to achieve the coveted top spot after their death.
