If there was a group that was hot in the late 90s, it was the Spice Girls. All five have appeared on American screens since January 23, 1998
The Spice Girls had their breakthrough success in 1996 with Wannabe, which spent two weeks in the Top 40. In the next year and a half they scored five more Top 40 hits. At the same time as their sixth hit, Too Much, entered the list, their cinema film Spice World also premiered.
The film shows the Spice Girls in London getting ready for a concert at the Royal Albert Hall. The film features guest roles including Elton John, Elvis Costello, Roger Moore and Meat Loaf. With a budget of 30 million dollars, the film earned more than three times that amount. On January 23, about four weeks after the UK premiere, the quintet could also be seen in the United States.
Despite making no financial profit, the film was unable to gain critical acclaim. At the Golden Raspberry Awards, the women were awarded the award for worst acting performance. The other ten nominations were not cashed.
That the group is still popular became clear in 2019 when a series of reunion concerts in the UK and Ireland sold out. The Spice Girls have since talked about a new world tour.
These days include the birthdays of Oceana (1982) and Natalie Major (1989).
Hit number 1 on January 23:
2010: Fireflies – Owl Town
2016: Love Yourself – Justin Bieber
2021: Driver’s License – Olivia Rodrigo
