Ford is cutting 3,800 jobs in Europe over the next three years, mainly among office workers and engineers. The hardest hit will be in Germany, where 2,300 jobs will be lost at factories in Cologne and Aachen. 1,300 jobs will be cut in the UK.
Trade unions expressed disappointment on Tuesday: they expected the loss of up to 2,500 jobs.
According to the American car manufacturer, the rise of electric cars is an important cause. Because Ford uses technology from Volkswagen, the group needs fewer engineers in Europe. Ford’s first electronic car based on VW technology will appear later this year.
In the future, Ford also wants to use electric technology that is being developed in the United States. “We are moving to a world with fewer platforms, requiring less work,” said Ford of Germany boss Martin Sander.
Ford is having a tough time in Europe. Sales have declined in recent years and the brand has canceled several previous blockbusters. For example, the once popular Mondeo business car disappeared, and the Focus and Fiesta were also nominated for disappearance.
Based on Automotive News Ford has been removing models, but forgetting to replace them with exciting new models. Therefore, customers continue to shop, according to news sites. This group has also ignored electric cars in Europe for too long and took too long to introduce hybrid drives. Finally, with its more powerful models, it was surpassed by its competitor Stellantis, which achieved great success in Europe with its Jeep.
In order to be successful again, according to the news media, Ford will return to the successful names of the past: one of the new electric models may be called Capri; the European counterpart to the famous Ford Mustang of the 1970s.
