Monkeypox: how to protect yourself

The recent outbreak monkey pox world has caused the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare an international outbreak a global emergency.

Despite this being an outbreak, experts say the risk is low for the general public. Here we consider recommendations from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the UK National Health Service, and WHO.

How to protect yourself from monkey pox:

  • Avoid contact with people who have just been diagnosed or suspected of being infected.
  • If you come into contact with someone who has symptoms, always wear a face mask.
  • If you change sexual partners, always use a condom and pay special attention to symptoms.
  • Avoid all kinds of contact with animals that may be carriers of the virus, especially those with a history of infection such as rats and monkeys.
  • Proper hand washing, especially after contact with infected or suspected infected humans or animals.
