Homeplus is a small charity that works with some of the most vulnerable individuals in Belfast – homeless people, refugees, asylum seekers, and destitute migrants.
It’s a day to day battle, and while each situation is different, so many of the issues are the same. From health issues, to no access to benefits; from extreme isolation, to needing help navigating the job application process – we are there to support the people who need it, either through direct support or connecting with the bodies who can – like health care or legal advice.
Our Drop- In Centre provides hot meals for up to 150 people a day, and helps over 500 individuals a year. Some of the other services we offer include clothing, shower and washing facilities, advice, three levels of English classes a week – one of which is for women only. Also volunteer opportunities, community allotment plots, emergency financial support, art projects (some women’s only), accommodation and employment support, and SeeBelfast – the optician’s charity offering free eye tests and glasses on a weekly basis.
We’re finding it tough in the current climate though. Everyone is. There’s less money about and the ongoing instability is putting pressure on everyone. So we’re going to look all this pressure maturely in the face and have some craic, in the name of charity. We’re holding a fundraiser. It’s going to be a night of pulling shapes and having the odd punt at a Night At The Races with finger food and a disco, in the Clayton Hotel in Belfast.
Every £1 raised at this event will make a significant impact on how much support we are in a position to give some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in Belfast.
