Pantomime Extravaganza set for 2017 in the SSE Arena
In December 2017, all carpets will be leading to the SSE Arena, so make your wish now for the largest theatrical event to hit the isle of Ireland this year. With Lumiere Productions from Newry, Dublin set-designer Claire Morrissey, Lisburn born costume creator Susan Scott, this is quite an all-Ireland production, not to mention Co-Directors Martin Lynch, Joe Rea and Dan Gordon, along with composer and arranger Conor Mitchell.
Martin Lynch said, “We are creating something brand new for the city of Belfast that will, I think, have a big impact. … We are putting together a first class cast that will knock the socks off you. And the SSE Arena, in the last year, they have configured a new theatre space named “Theatre at the Arena”. It’s about compacting the space down to a quarter of its normal size. … It will be more of an intimate setting and be much more of a theatre space. We want to use every aspect of the space, embrace it and make it work for us – very exciting prospects”.
SSE Airtricity Sponsorship Manager Leanne Sheill added: “It’s great to see so many local talent involved, and we are absolutely delighted to be rolling out the carpet for X-Factor sensation RHYDIAN playing the baddie”.
Media Partner Q Radio will be setting the scene with a pre-show disco each night. Managing Director of Q Radio, Robert Walsh stated, “We knew we had to say yes … We felt this was a winner from the from the first step forward. From our point of view, this is one of those very exciting things with this venue that we would like to be associated with. … I’m a theatre-goer and a great fan of stage and production, so I’m well aware of the bonifides and the wonderful talent that’s involved in this particular project. You’ll here an awful lot about this on Q Radio over the next number of months.”
Dan Gordon – Co-director: “When you think of the SSE arena, you usually think of two things, the first thing is family and the second thing is spectacle. This place has established itself as a major entertainment venue here in Belfast, and the variety of things we’ve been able to see here over the years have just got better and better. … And Panto is the one thing that is yet to come. It has arrived. I’m delighted to be a part of it”.
“We love entertaining people, we love getting people in, and I think this place will lend itself in a terrific way. Martin did talk about the size of the arena. But that doesn’t daunt us … although it’s big, it’s small. You feel that you are never too far from the stage or part of the action. We are keen to move among the audience, among the young people particularly. Very often, panto is the first experience anybody ever has of the theatre, of a dark space of lights, colours and shapes and sounds. So that’s very important to us, we want it to be a welcoming space, we wanted somewhere where people will want to come back and form that tradition of an SSE Arena panto. … We are bringing the west end to the east end. We are bringing that feel of those big shows like Harry Potter. We have the talent and the ability to do this … We are confident, quietly, that it is something to be seen”.
RHYDIAN knows the city well and has a great association with it. He’s played many times from the Waterfront to the Opera House and now in the SSE Arena. He was the highest selling newcomer with his first album and has a string of hits. RHYDIAN informed us that he, “just finished panto in Bournemouth; it’s become a big part of my career. I also play a lot of musical theatre. I have just finished playing the evil dentist in the ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ which was a huge success. It will be a delight to come back and play in the SSE Arena. … I love the city and … I’m excited because I know it’s going to be great. I signed up a year in advance. That’s unheard of really. Usually we sign up for Panto March or April time. But I heard about this. It’s a role I’ve always wanted to play and it’s going to be on a huge scale and a great success and it’s got a great cast. I can’t wait to come here to Belfast and wow audiences with our great show.”
THE SPECTACULAR ALADDIN will run for 29 performances ONLY, 14-27 December, 2017
