Shotglass’ PR!CK set to make a big impression at Belfast Film Festival

Belfast’s best newest, shiniest and best lubricated theatre company Shot Glass presents PR!CK – their comic love letter to British genre films of the 60s and 70s.

Critical respect has finally arrived for actor Rod Chineham. Despite being the highest paid domestic film star of the 1970’s, plaudits and laurel wreaths have always eluded
him. He bestrode that decade like a colossus in flares, the highest paid British actor in the world, producing film after film of tepid horror or softcore sexual shenanigans. Now he can only get arrested when he’s actually getting arrested (he intended to pay for that Cumberland sausage).

For one night only, then another one, Rod Chineham will be appearing at the Belfast Film Festival, in front of an appreciative audience of horror nerds and answering questions about one of the worst films he ever made: “Helligans”, a football themed vampire movie. Sitting alongside him is the film’s director, octogenarian hack, Peter Duffer.

As the evening wears on and he wades through his carry-out, Rod begins to warm to his interviewer, TV’s own Lucy Louche, a gothic vision in dangerous red lipstick and biker boots. But maybe it’s the out of date tins, maybe it’s the proximity to the luscious Miss Louche, but the film doesn’t seem to be the one he remembers making. There are elisions, fact and fantasy begin to blur, and Rod begins to find himself cast as the villain in a brand new story.

PR!CK is directed by Adam Turns and stars Nick Hardin, Sara Dylan, Mark Claney, Holly Hannaway and Adam Turns. It is Shot Glass Theatre’s full bodied homage to all those influences that made them the reassuringly dysfunctional beings they are today.

Expect undeserved and unreserved reverence for British sex comedies, fruity language, outmoded sexual politics and a heaped spoon serving of come-uppance.

Join Rod as he makes his way through an unbranded plastic bag of Polish lager, staring at his younger self on screen until he finally has to join in the action himself!

PR!CK is written by John Patrick Higgins with Joseph Nawaz, directed by Adam Turns and stars stars Nick Hardin, Sara Dylan, Mark Claney, Holly Hannaway and Adam Turns.

PR!CK runs at the Black Box, Belfast from 16-17 April. Tickets are £7.

“THINK ‘LIFE ON MARS’ MEETS ‘THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO’”. THEN FORGET THAT AND BRACE YOURSELF FOR THE UNADULTERATED HORROR OF PR!CK.” Michael Billington, Guardian.

“YOU’D BE A PRICK TO MISS IT…” Rod Chineham, yesterday.
